Brea, Calif. (July 21, 2011) – It’s a heated debate for which many sci-fi enthusiasts have sought resolution: which franchise is better, Star Wars or Star Trek? While it may not be possible to formally determine, the nation’s largest provider of pet health insurance has left it to the dogs (and cats) to decide. In light of Comic-Con taking place July 20-24 in San Diego, Veterinary Pet Insurance Co. (VPI) analyzed its database of more than 485,000 insured pets to find out which science fiction classic reigns superior. Tallies were based on pets with names identical to the characters, as well as variations like “Chew Barka” and “Dog Vader.” Of the 720 total names inspired by the bitter rivals, VPI policyholders clearly favor The Force. Below are the results:

Yoda 180 Mr. Spock 29
Chewbacca 165 William Riker 9
