The Market
  • There more than 9,000 species of birds of which approximately 300 species are commonly kept as pets.
  • There are 12.6 million pet birds in the U.S.
  • 4.6 million households own birds.
    • 53.4% own one bird;
    • 24.9% own two birds;
    • 7.8% own three birds;
    • 13.9% own four or more.
  • The pacific region of the U.S. has the largest pet bird population than other areas of the country. Specifically, Washington State, California and Oregon. These three states alone have more than 900,000 pet birds.
  • Avian care is increasing. In 1991, consumers spent $37.7 million on veterinary medical expenditures for birds. By 1996, that number had grown to $91.2 million.

Veterinary Pet Insurance Avian Coverage
  • The Avian Plan covers thousands of medical problems relating to accidental injuries and illnesses. Optional coverage is available for preventive and routine care.
  • Pet owners can visit any licensed veterinarian, veterinary specialist or animal hospital in the world.
  • Veterinary Pet Insurance helps pay for office calls, prescriptions, treatments, lab fees, x-rays, surgery and hospitalization for covered medical problems.
  • Optional Routine Care Coverage is available to cover an annual exam, blood testing, fecal analysis, and nail and wing trim. For just $8.25 a month, policyholders can receive up to $181 in annual benefits and no deductible applies to this coverage.
  • Policies cover birds of all types three months of age and older. There is no age limit. Rates are based on the size of the pet.
    • Small birds - $ 84 annually ($7 monthly) --- (Finches, Canaries, Parakeets & Love Birds)
    • Medium birds - $120 annually ($10 monthly) -- (Cockatiels, Conures & Pionus)
    • Large birds - $156 annually ($13 monthly) -- (Macaws, Cockatoos, Parrots, Ducks & Geese)
    • Other - $198 ($16.50 monthly) --------- (Ostriches, Emus & Rhea)
